Balloting for Star Education Fair 2011 booths

THE Star Education Fair 2009 will see some new faces among the more familiar exhibitors from past years.
Newcomer Trinity College Dublin will be exhibiting under a pavillion comprising nine other Irish instituitions.
“Irish education already has a good reputation here, especially in the area of medicine,” said Enterprise Ireland executive secretary Sabrina Ng. “But we want to raise awareness of Ireland’s top-notch courses in business, IT, engineering and hospitality.”
Ng was among representatives from over 145 who turned up at Menara Star last Wednesday to ballot for booths for the fair next year.

The event will once again be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on Jan 10 and 11.
Brickfields Asia College was the first to pick out the location of its booths during the balloting session.
The college, as well as Inti Education Group and KDU College are the biggest exhibitors at next year’s fair, with each taking 14 out of more than 400 booths.
The Russian Centre of Science and Culture, a non-profit organisation that promotes Russian education and culture in Malaysia, will be exhibiting for the second time at the event.
Education head Yulia Shestakova said that the centre aims to build good relations between Russia and Malaysia through education.
Another newcomer to the Star Education Fair 2009 is Penang-based Study International Education Consult, which is taking one booth. The company acts as a student recruitment agency for about 40 universities from the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
Apart from vying for the most strategic booths, exhibitors also had the chance to purchase travel packages to Penang, where the fair will be held on Feb 28 and March 1 at the Penang International Sports Arena. http://educationsforallage.blogspot.com/

Education is about learning…and about building a community of students, alumni, faculty, parents, and staff. But much of the time, it is also about raising money to make ends meet. It doesn’t matter whether your institution is K-12, a community college, or an Ivy League university, costs are skyrocketing and funding harder to come by. Development has become a continuous process, requiring more time and resources, with less staff and cash. You wish you could focus more on promoting new curriculum, and more science, technology, and arts projects, but your fundraising campaigns aren’t bringing in enough money. And you can only raise tuition so much in a difficult economy.
One thing never changes: the more successful you are at getting all your stakeholders involved, the easier it is to achieve your educational mission − and your fundraising goals! With so much at stake, you can’t afford to fail…but with so little to invest in staff and market research, how can you succeed?

Fermi solves the mystery of gamma ray pulsars

A pulsar is a highly magnetised rapidly spinning neutron star , the dense core remaining aftera supernova explosion.
NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope solves the mystery of previously unidentified gamma-ray sources. Fermi has now uncovered 16 pulsars based on their high energy gamma rays alone.
Fermi can 'feel' the gamma-ray pulsations gives important information about the mechanism behind the emissions. Radio pulsars emit narrow beams of radio waves that sweep around like a lighthouse beacon, bathing the Earth in radiation to enable detections. If the radio beam misses the Earth, the pulsar cannot be detected by radio telescopes, but FermiÕs ability to detect so many radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsars indicates that the gamma-rays are emitted in a beam that is wider and more fan-like than the radio beam.

Red giant star Betelgeuse is shrinking

Orion’s red supergiant Betelgeuse has been steadily shrinking over the last 15 years.

Betelgeuse is so big that if placed in our Solar System it would extend to the orbit of Jupiter. But thanks to long term monitoring by Berkeley’s Infrared Spatial Interferometer (ISI) at Mt Wilson, measurements of the star’s diameter reveal the giant to be shrinking. Over the last 15 years, the star has shrunk by more than 15 percent, equivalent to the same diameter as the orbit of Venus.

Despite its diminished size however, there is no evidence to suggest that the star is dimming. But we do not know why the star is shrinking.

Since the star’s size depends on the wavelength of light used to measure it, it is difficult to compare measurements. Tenuous gas in the outer regions of the star emits light as well as absorbs it, which presents a challenge in determining the edge of the star.

Cosmic blobs and Galaxies

Cosmic blobs are immense reservoirs of hydrogen gas located in the early Universe. Black holes and star formation have been observed in cosmic blobs.

The glow of cosmic blobs in optical light had remained a mystery for the astronomers but with the help of telescopes such as Chandra X-ray Observatory,Spitzer Space Telescope and Hubble they have found that the source of power is coming from growing supermassive black holes and from newly forming stars.

Cosmic rays accelerated by exploded stars

Using ESO’s Very Large Telescope and NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, astronomers have shown that cosmic rays from the Milky Way are very efficiently accelerated in the remnants of exploded stars.

Cosmic rays are extremely energetic particles – mostly protons – moving at close to the speed of light. They originate from outside our Solar System and are constantly bombarding the Earth’s atmosphere at a rate of some 100,000 per square metre per second.

Earth gravity and solar eclipse

A team of Chinese scientists is planning to conduct a once-in-a-century experiment on July 22, the day of the total solar eclipse, which would test the controversial theory that gravity drops slightly during a total eclipse.

According to a report in New Scientist, geophysicists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences are preparing an unprecedented array of highly sensitive instruments at six sites across the country to take gravity readings during the total eclipse due to pass over southern China on July 22.

The results, which will be analyzed in the coming months, could confirm once and for all that anomalous fluctuations observed during past eclipses are real.

The first sign that gravity fluctuates during an eclipse was in 1954, when French economist and physicist Maurice Allais noticed erratic behaviour in a swinging pendulum when an eclipse passed over Paris.

Pendulums typically swing back and forth as a result of gravity and the rotation of the Earth. At the start of the eclipse, however, the pendulum's swing direction shifted violently, suggesting a sudden change in gravitational pull.

In the run up to July's eclipse, Chinese researchers have prepared eight gravimeters and two pendulums spread across six monitoring sites.

At over five minutes, the event will be the longest total solar eclipse predicted for this century.

Shuttle Endeavour finally launched

Shuttle Endeavour finally roared to life and blasted off Wednesday on its sixth try, rocketing away through a hazy sky toward a Friday rendezvous with the International Space Station from Kennedy Space Center.

Multiple pieces of foam insulation fell from the ship's external tank during the early moments of flight, but it was not immediately clear whether the shuttle's fragile heat shield suffered any significant damage.

With commander Mark Polansky and pilot Douglas Hurley at the controls, Endeavour's three main engines ignited in staggered sequence and throttled up to full thrust, followed seconds later by ignition of the shuttle's twin solid-fuel boosters at 6:03:10 p.m. EDT.

President Obama hails successful Hubble repair

President Barack Obama called the crew of the shuttle Atlantis late Wednesday and congratulated the astronauts on the successful overhaul of the Hubble Space Telescope. He also promised to name a new NASA administrator soon, although he provided no clues as to who might get the nod.

Shuttle Endeavour launch on sunday postponed

NASA on Sunday postponed the launch of space shuttle Endeavour for the day due storms near Kennedy Space Center.

NASA will next try to launch the shuttle on Monday at 6:51 p.m.

Endeavour's launch was postponed twice last month because of a liquid hydrogen leak.

Endeavour, carrying seven astronauts and a key component for Japan's Kibo science laboratory, is to head to the International Space Station for a 16-day mission. Five spacewalks are planned for the crew after the shuttle docks.

Indian moon mission saved

India's only satellite Chandrayaan -I orbiting moon came close to overheating and failure but scientists improvised to save it.

Last month the satellite lost a critical instrument called the star sensor. The sensor helps the $80-million satellite stay oriented so its cameras and other recording equipment are constantly aimed at the lunar surface. Without the sensor , the mission is useless.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) team used other systems such as an antenna mechanism and gyroscope to make sure that satellite was " looking at the moon". Now, the mission is safe and the systems are working.

Chandrayaan is scheduled to last two years. Scientists hope that Chandrayaan project will boost India's capacity to build more efficient rockets and satellites.

http://interiordesign-education.blogspot.com/When we first saw Alessandro Prodan’s work, we thought we wouldn’t ever be surprised seeing what CG artists are capable of. But the creator of the following images just proved us wrong. Hail the Russian CG visualization specialist Anton Valiev who has created these drop dead gorgeous renders.

Compared to Alessandro’s work these images lay more emphasis to the interiors and the tools they used for creating them are also different. Anton used 3DS Max for design and VRay for rendering while Alessandro chose Maya with MentalRay for rendering.

For the clueless, this level of photorealism is very difficult to achieve in computer aided design and if you are capable of doing this it means that you are the very cream of the trade you practise.

The Elmgreen School officially opened by Tessa Jowell

The Elmgreen School in West Norwood, the first Parented Promoted School in the UK, was officially opened today by The Right Honourable Tessa Jowell MP, who described the school as a beautiful building that is fulfilling the dreams and ambitions of the parents and children.
The school designed by Scott Brownrigg and part of the award-winning Lambeth BSF programme, opened to students in September 2009 and has been developed through a partnership between Lambeth Council and the Parent Promoter Foundation (PPF) and built by contractor Carillion.
The £26 million three storey school, designed by Scott Brownrigg, provides 1,100 places for 11 to 18 year-olds, including a 30 place hearing impaired unit, and a 200 place sixth form. The building is designed as a single envelope with facilities placed around a central space that is based on the idea of a medieval market square. This principle allows for total flexibility. The Market Square is used to move through and connect learning areas; for curriculum activity and enhanced learning; to socialise in; and provides a stimulating inside/outside environment that has been transformed into a year-round external space through its sawtooth glass roof.
Since September, staff at The Elmgreen School have been able to realise transformational learning opportunities through using agile and varied teaching spaces, including those in the orchard and on the roof top science garden. The design enables a high level of natural supervision and allows learning to be ‘on show’. Benefits of the design are already being felt with the school reporting a significant improvement against KPI’s and an 80% reduction in Fixed Term Exclusions.
John Wilkinson, Acting Headteacher, said, “"We were very privileged, as school staff, to be so closely involved, with the architects, in creating a building that reflects the ethos of the school. Being in our new building has transformed the learning opportunities available to students and families."

University Center among nation's best designs

http://interiordesign-education.blogspot.com/
The world of interior design has taken notice of Trine University.

Trine’s new University Center and Center for Technology and Online Resources is featured in the Educational Interiors Showcase of American School & University’s August 2008 edition. The 80-year-old publication devoted exclusively to education facilities is considered the authority for information about the educational facilities market.

The annual competition honoring educational interior design excellence spotlights projects representing some of the most effective learning environments in America. Trine’s University Center and Center for Technology and Online Resources earned a citation for Outstanding Designs in student centers/service areas.

A jury of American Institute of Architects members and education administrators evaluated submissions from architectural firms, schools and universities across the country. One hundred-nine projects were chosen for publication.

Featured projects include designs that
take essential elements of education design—security, creating an environment for learning, a healthful environment—and package that into an award-winning facility. The jury used sustainability, character, long-term appropriateness of materials and colors, innovation, safety, balance of collaborative spaces, and adaptability for current and future technology as criteria for selection.

Schools with outstanding designs in Trine’s category included Glendale Community College in Glendale, Arizona, Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, Merritt College in Oakland, Calif., University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash., Berklee College of Music in Boston, Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., and Rasmussen College in Lake Elmo, Minn.

Design Collaborative of Fort Wayne designed the 73,454-square-foot University Center and Center for Technology and Online Resources, with Jim Ingledue Construction Inc. in Angola was project manager.

Trine President Dr. Earl D. Brooks II identified the lack of an outstanding student center as a central issue when he arrived on the campus in 2000. In the ensuing years, he worked with the university’s Board of Trustees, alumni, and local and community leaders to launch the Vision for the Future capital campaign to revitalize the campus. A sweeping renovation, including the opening of the stunning University Center and Center for Technology and Online Technology a year ago, followed.

The center forms an activity hub at the middle of campus, housed in a sleek package of curved architecture, window walls, and black and grey granite floors. Amenities include a 320-seat theater, indoor and outdoor gourmet dining, library, digital group work space, fitness center, bookstore, radio station, and post office.

A main “S”-shaped atrium space anchors the center’s strong design concept. Situated between the residential and academic areas of campus, it takes advantage of the student traffic passing between the two destinations.

“This prestigious award supports our vision to transform our campus into a learning environment unlike any other,” President Brooks said. “Our mission is to provide a first-class education in an atmosphere with the aesthetics to challenge the senses and stimulate the intellect of our students.”

NGC 6280 Nebula

NGC 6820 is an emission nebula that surrounds open cluster NGC 6823 in the constellation Vulpecula.

Emission nebulae are clouds of high temperature gas. The atoms in the cloud are energized by ultraviolet light from a nearby star and emit radiation as they fall back into lower energy states (in much the same way as a neon light). These nebulae are usually red because the predominant emission line of hydrogen happens to be red .

Velpecula is a faint constellation in the northern sky.

Comet crystals feel the heat

Since comets formed out in the cold depths of the Solar System, the existence of materials in them that must have been created in high temperatures has been a real puzzle, until now. NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope has observed the infrared signature of tiny silicate crystals, of the type found in comets, being created in the planet-forming disc around a young star called EX Lupi, in the constellation of Lupus.

The stellar outbursts occur when the growing young star accumulates a large amount of mass from the dusty, gaseous disc that is spinning around it. Each outburst sends a flash of heat permeating through the disc. At the distance the crystals were seen at, the temperature reached 725 degrees Celsius (about 1,000 kelvin), enough to thermally ‘anneal’ the silicate dust.

Young pulsar shows its hand

small, dense object only twelve miles in diameter is responsible for this beautiful X-ray nebula that spans 150 light years. At the center of this image made by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory is a very young and powerful pulsar, known as PSR B1509-58, or B1509 for short. The pulsar is a rapidly spinning neutron star which is spewing energy out into the space around it to create complex and intriguing structures, including one that resembles a large cosmic hand. In this image, the lowest energy X-rays that Chandra detects are red, the medium range is green, and the most energetic ones are colored blue. Astronomers think that B1509 is about 1,700 years old and is located about 17,000 light years away.

If Destiny’s Child was one woman, she might sound like Jazzy on her first album release titled Oh Jazzy. Reminiscent of that clean and modern California style R&B, Jazzy enters with an album filled with cozy and sexy tracks. On “Open” mental scenarios will enter your mind leaving you wanting to get “Open” with that special someone. “If” is one of those songs that every woman at some point might play for her man pleading for him to come back. “In relationships mistakes were made and this is one of them baby,” Jazzy coos. A solid songwriter, Jazzy’s storytelling lyrics capture the art of R&B.

On Oh Jazzy tracks like “Body”, “Make Up”, “Ticket”, and “In Love” fluctuate between up-tempo to down-tempo grooves with style. Collaborating with Bobbie Cherie Griffin, Jazzy also holds songwriting credentials throughout the entire album through The Write Chix. Easy on the ears, the album opens with “Make Up”, with its strong, healthy beat and uplifting vibe. “Baby can we make up, so you can sweat off my makeup”; lyrics that bring occasional smiles throughout the refrain.

If you like Teedra Moses, you’ll enjoy the fresh sound of Jazzy. Not too heavy or too hard, Jazzy’s debut effort Oh Jazzy brings a taste of the 2000 era that spawned the birth of diva’s like Mya, Beyonce, Brandy and Monica back with a clean bill of health.

Had to reup this cuz its hot, that simple, a really bangin rnb album, with a concrete help from noticeable producers.

A Special Tribute to J Dilla

FULL SCREEN
The Sounds of VTech / Suite for Ma Dukes in Cedar Falls

A year ago, conductor Jason Weinberger heard Suite for Ma Dukes for the first time. A long time fan of J. Dilla, Weinberger’s first thought when he heard the music was that he needed to find a way to perform Miguel Atwood-Ferugon’s “stunning reinventions of Dilla’s music.” ”I’m always looking for ways to open up the traditional orchestra experience to new things anyway, so this seemed very natural.”

After a quick Google search, Jason found Miguel and sent him a message to see if there was anyway to get the Dilla pieces in front of one of the orchestras he worked with. A few months later they met in LA and connected over Dilla, Flying Lotus, and Lutoslawski, and the rest is history.

Earlier this year, Miguel Atwood-Ferugon and the Mochilla Team flew out to Cedar Falls, Iowa to witness J. Dilla’s music being performed as part of the WCFSO’s (Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra) tribute to Great American Composers. The evening had Dilla’s music performed alongside legends Duke Ellington and William Grant Still.

“As the person responsible for programming the concert, I probably don’t have to explain how exciting it was for me to find myself performing Dilla’s music with the WCFSO. Even more gratifying, though, were other aspects of the evening – feeling the connections emerge between Dilla and his predecessors William Grant Still and Duke Ellington, taking the orchestra outside of its comfort level and in process to a whole other level of music making, and especially offering our audience the opportunity to abandon preconceptions and discover something special. In the words of one listener in attendance that night, ‘the music was beyond interesting, especially the movements from Suite for Ma Dukes by J. Dilla…’ we were swept along enjoying sound adventures we never could have imagined that we would enjoy.” – Jason Weinberger

Watch as this video takes you on a sound adventure and witness the magic of Dilla’s music performed on what would have been the eve of his 36th birthday to a sold out audience. The standing ovation Miguel received was testament not only to the beauty of his work on Dilla’s music, but the power of music. Sounds ability to open ears, minds, and hearts.

“I think Dilla would have been proud of that.” – Jason Weinberger

You may purchase the Timeless DVD Box Set or the Suite For Ma Dukes here (CD only $8)

You dont have to pay tribute to this legend only on his anniversary (10th Feb) every year, to me he should be celebrated anytime one wishes to do so, by sharing his music so more people who are confused will get to know better who he is and he has crafted. R.I.P. J DIlla, your beats will always be bumpin in my head with that crazy drumline in 'Raw Addict', that is what you have others will never do, being different, sampling a 4 bar loop which sounded no way close to what 'the red' is now, i could go on with your older stuff, but i would stop here and hopefully all this blog post and music i have shared will make you realise what a great impact Dilla Dawg has been on Hip Hop, nuff said. Dilla Forever.

Something has struck Jupiter

Following up on a tip by an amateur astronomer that a new dark "scar" had suddenly appeared on Jupiter, on 20th July, 2009 between 3 and 9 a.m. PDT (6 a.m. and noon EDT) scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., using NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility at the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii, gathered evidence indicating an impact.

New infrared images show the likely impact point was near the south polar region, with a visibly dark "scar" and bright upwelling particles in the upper atmosphere detected in near-infrared wavelengths, and a warming of the upper troposphere with possible extra emission from ammonia gas detected at mid-infrared wavelengths.

It could be due to the comet but the scientists are not sure .

Fireworks in Helix nebula

Image taken by Subaru Telescope shows comet -shaped knots lighting up the Helix nebula.

A nebula is cloud of gas and dust in space. Some nebulas are regions where new stars are being formed, while others are the remains of dead or dying stars. Nebulas come in many shapes and sizes. There are four different types of nebulas- planetary , reflection, emision and absorption nebulas.

Helix nebula is located about 710 light years from Earth and was first planetary nebula in which knots were abserved.

Mars orbiter imagery boosts Curiosity rover's life search

NASA and university scientists reviewing data from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) say evidence is growing that the planet harbored life in its past or that Martian microbes exist now.

They say their views are based on the growing body of data on the diversity of water related minerals discovered by MRO. It is also supported by findings from other spacecraft such as Europe's Mars Express orbiter and NASA's Phoenix lander and twin Mars rovers.

The MRO data is being used to narrow the best sites to locate life related evidence, while also being safe enough for the Mars Science Laboratory rover "Curiosity" set for launch in 2011.
